Renowned for natural beauty, sparkling lakes and clean air, the Muskoka Region is Ontario’s playground. Fondly referred to as “cottage country”, Muskoka is located just two hours north of Toronto – yet it offers an unplugged pace that’s a world away from Canada’s largest city. Still, its accessibility to Toronto – and Ottawa too - makes it a perfect destination for visitors who wish to combine urban and outdoor experiences into one fantastic holiday.

The 2,500-square-mile natural playground includes 8,699 miles of shoreline, 17 charming small towns and villages, more than 2000 lakes and countless breathtaking waterfalls and rivers. Muskoka is bordered by the granite peaks of Algonquin Provincial Park to the east and the 30,000 islands of Georgian Bay Islands National Park to the west.
Muskoka’s resorts and lodges have been hosting international visitors for over 140 years, all of them here to enjoy the region’s abundance of trees, water and wildlife. Today, you can add to that list the area’s fantastic golf, relaxing spas, incredible dining, as well as endless boating, paddling and hiking experiences. With more than 80 resorts to choose from – including luxurious 5-star hotels, family-run lodges, quaint inns, historic Bed and Breakfasts and rustic cottage resorts – Muskoka has something for everyone.

Whatever your pleasure, Muskoka is a paradise for water enthusiasts. There’s mile after mile of waterways and lakes to explore, and many local businesses offer rentals of boats, canoes and camping equipment, even providing training and guides if necessary. For those who enjoy a genuine back-to-nature experience, canoe excursions are available in both Algonquin Provincial Park and Georgian Bay.
One of Canada’s most famous cruise vessels, the Royal Mail Ship RMS Segwun, also happens to be North America’s oldest still operating steamship. Launched in 1887, this 99 passenger floating museum – along with her larger sister ship, the Wenonah II – entertains visitors throughout the cruise season with tours along fabled Millionaire’s Row, home to some of the world’s most luxurious summer cottages.
Gentler watery pursuits include swimming and relaxing on beaches, and the region is also popular for scuba divers.

Fans of fishing, too, won't be disappointed: spinning, bait casting, fly-fishing, ice fishing, kayak fishing… pike, bass, trout, walleye and muskie. Whatever your preference, Muskoka boasts some of the best freshwater sport fishing anywhere, with packages available for avid anglers and novices alike. Whether it’s flying into otherwise inaccessible lakes, trolling the shoreline, or just dropping a line from the dock of a cozy cottage resort, you’re sure to catch something.
Be sure to visit one of Muskoka’s many parks. Top of your list should be Algonquin Provincial Park, a vast expanse of land stretching 3000 square miles. Algonquin’s dramatic scenery consists of endless stretches of trees, rocky ridges, spruce bogs, and endless lakes and streams. The best way to experience this rugged beauty is on foot, and 19 clearly marked interpretive trails in Algonquin encourage exploration of the Park’s unique natural environment. You’ll also encounter some of Algonquin’s 53 species of mammals, 272 species of birds, or 31 species of reptiles and amphibians.
Muskoka offers a unique experience with an abundance of activities, attractions, outdoor adventures and accommodations, so be sure to see the entire region during your stay!
