Interview with Algonquin Outfitters

Gord from Algonquin Outfitters in Algonquin Provincial Park has been managing this Outfitter for over 19 years. We as ask Gord what it's really like to have probably one the best jobs in the world if your an adventurer. Beats sitting behind a desk all day is what we say!

Q: What makes Algonquin Provincial Park so special?

"The park is special for so many reasons. Bottom line, it is an iconic wilderness area, easily accessible to many people, with a wide range of year-round self-propelled activities to choose from. I visit the park in all seasons and have enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, canoe-camping, white-water paddling, hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, all in Algonquin Park."

Q: How long have you lived and worked in Algonquin/Ontario?

"19 years in the Algonquin park area."

Q: What does your role involve?

"My main job is managing the Oxtongue Lake store location and helping people plan their vacation experience in Algonquin Park. From the initial phone call or email, I will help folks with every step of the trip planning process."

Q: What's your favourite Algonquin/Ontario outdoor adventure activity?

"Summer: canoe tripping. Winter: backcountry skiing"

Q:  Are there any Algonquin memories that stay with you?

"I could write a book. I think one of the most memorable canoe trips was a nine-day trip with my wife and a good friend of ours. We started at the headwaters of the Nipissing River and finished at the Opeongo Lake store. In early June, we had glorious weather, unbelievable brook trout fishing, great food and in nine days we saw maybe five other people."

Q: What would you recommend visitors to Algonquin/Ontario to try or see?

"Tricky question. It really depends on how much time people have and what their comfort level and experience will allow them to do. The best canoe/kayak day trip, in my opinion, is our Hailstorm Creek Wildlife Viewing trip, at lake Opeongo. It is by far the best experience if you want to see moose in their natural setting and you only have one day."
